Why Let a CFP® Guide Your Financial Health

Marshall Rathmell |

When did you go for your last checkup with your doctor? Do you schedule an annual checkup every year? Every two years? Ever?

Your financial health is much like your physical health. So, let’s compare the two.

Preventative vs Reactive

The healthiest people tend to see their doctors on a preventative basis. Maybe not every year, but on occasion. They don’t always wait until their symptoms are dire and they can barely walk. Seeking the advice of a medical professional is not considered a character flaw.

They value their friends and relatives in a general sense. Yet the medical advice handed out freely (usually on social media), they take with a grain of salt.

WebMD is a good resource, but it doesn’t take the place of a professional, real-life physician. An in-person examination of their situation goes a long way toward accepting the advice of any doctor.

So, they make an appointment to see their physician.

Your Certified Financial Planners (CFP®) – A Physician for Financial Health

The people with the healthiest finances see their CFPs on a preventative basis, too. Maybe not every year, but most. They know not to wait until a financial problem erupts.

Financial advice from friends, family, media and the internet falls under the category of “information to be checked with my CFP”. It’s not really advice.

A personal, confidential, one-on-one appointment with a CFP isn’t magic. No more than going to the doctor is magic. But a thorough examination of your financial situation will get you some solid advice. Then, we can work together to take the next steps for your financial peace of mind.
